Our young musicians took part in a masterclass with two exceptional and experienced performers, Louise Williams and William Howard
Louise Williams was a founder member of the Endellion quartet and later violist in the Chilingirian Quartet and the Raphael Ensemble. She has also played as guest viola with the Takacs Quartet, Nash Ensemble, the Lindsays and many other groups. Currently she is a member of the Frith Piano Quartet and Andras Schiff’s orchestra, Cappella Andrea Barca. She also plays as guest principal in several UK orchestras and teaches at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Her many recordings include three CDs of British viola music with David Owen Norris and the complete Bartok and Dvorak Quartets. She plays on a viola made in 1616 by the brothers Amati.
WILLIAM HOWARD, described in The Independent as “a pianist of quite special lustrousness and versatility”, is established as one of Britain’s leading pianists, enjoying a career that has taken him to over 40 different countries. His performing life consists of solo recitals, concerto performances, guest appearances with chamber ensembles and instrumentalists, and regular touring with the Schubert Ensemble of London, of which he is a founder member. William performs regularly at major venues and festivals in the UK and can be heard frequently on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. He has made over forty CD recordings and premiered several dozen new works by leading composers from the UK and abroad. His latest recording of Sixteen Love Songs for solo piano was released by Orchid Classics in June and is the start of a wider project to commission sixteen new piano love songs and to set up a national composing competition. http://www.williamhoward.co.uk
YOUNG MUSICIANS W14 inspired by KOFMA.
It was the brainchild of Claire Mouradian, a teacher at Addison Primary and Bute House schools and held in the Kensington Olympia parish church of St. Matthew.
The theme was Colour and Music. Before coming to play, the children were asked to paint a picture inspired by the music they were studying. This exercise in putting visual colour down on paper would hopefully reinforce and fix the aural colour of the music in the mind of the young musicians. No teacher’s direction was involved and the visual results were entirely the creation of their imagination.
‘Girl with Sunflowers’ was drawn by Yinxi Lui, aged nine, and ‘Dollars’ by Artiguane Hnitka, aged seven, both inspired by their violin pieces. They are both at Addison Primary.
‘Ballerina’, was drawn by 8-year-old Lara Moeller, a piano pupil at Bute House.
Azad Telfizian, aged 11, another pianist, at the International School, produced a dazzling ‘Tsunami’ – a glowing sun, surrounded by grey, blue and red rays. Fleur, aged 12, painted a collage, ‘Patchwork’, inspired by her ‘cello piece.
Two local artists – Jiri Hnitka and Kam Johal – painted a fresco during the performance inspired by the music.
In addition there were two excellent young performers. Azad Telfizian played Bergmuller and Bach. Jack Mouradian, an oustanding young sixth former pianist and music scholar at Emanuel School in Wandswoth, played a J S Bach Prelude and Fugue, the Beethoven Pathetique and Debussy La Cathedrale Engloutie. He also played a Telemann fantasia for oboe.
